Why Gareth Southgate Axed Jack Wilshere From England World Cup Squad

Jack Wilshere won’t be part of England’s travelling party to Russia for the 2018 World Cup.

Gareth Southgate is set to name his England squad today, with the manager expected to leave behind Wilshere in favour of Manchester City’s Fabian Delph.

The Arsenal midfielder featured in 38 games this season, playing 20 Premier League matches.

But despite a productive campaign, Southgate has snubbed him in his squad.

And, per The Times, it’s suggested that Southgate remains concerned about Wilshere’s fitness levels.

He wasn’t impressed with his conditioning before England’s friendly fixtures against the Netherlands and Italy in March.

Wilshere made the squad against the Netherlands but returned to his club prior to the Italy game due to a minor ankle injury.

What’s more, it’s claimed that the 26-year-old has been unable to keep up during Southgate’s England training drills.

Southgate has also reportedly contacted Wilshere who took the news well.

With no summer international duty on the horizon, he’ll be hoping to resolve his contract situation at the Emirates.

His contract is approaching an expiration with the club continuing to hold talks about his future.

He also remains heavily linked with a move away from North London.
