If you need a team relegated from the Premier League, who you gonna call? Well, Patrick van Aanholt is your man for the job.
Today, the Dutchman scored the second goal in a 2-0 win for Crystal Palace that relegated Huddersfield to the Championship after two years in the top-flight.
The defeat at Selhurst Park, along with wins for both Burnley and Southampton, means that Jan Siewert’s team have equalled the infamous record set by Derby County for being only the second team in the league’s history relegated with six games still to go of the season.
And one Eagles fan has brought to our attention on Twitter, Van Aanholt has quite the track record when it comes to relegating teams to the second tier.
That’s because in the past three seasons, Palace have relegated Hull, Stoke and Huddersfield – the common theme being that the former Chelsea left-back scored the final goal in all three games. A pretty crazy stat when you think of it.
You can even go back to Van Aanholt’s Sunderland days to find another occasion where he relegated a team as four seasons ago, he scored the first goal in a 3-0 win over Everton – a result that sent rivals Newcastle down.
However, it is evident that the man himself does not take pride in relegating other teams. He took to Twitter to post a classy message to the Terriers and their fans on a difficult day.
