Dani Carvajal not only snubbed Cristiano Ronaldo when choosing the best ever Real Madrid player, but he also failed to side with the Portuguese superstar when comparing him to Lionel Messi.
Carvajal weighed in on football’s age-old question in 2018 following Ronaldo’s sensational transfer to Juventus.
The Spanish right-back was asked to pick between the two serial Ballon d’Or winners and even though he was teammates with Ronaldo for five seasons, he failed to side with him.
“I think Messi and Cristiano are hardy comparable,” he said. “They are two of the best players in history, but they are very different. Messi is a player who generates more football, he has better vision for a pass.
“Messi is a player who always has the ball stuck to his feet and he always finds space. Cristiano is a player who focuses on getting into the area and scoring. He is an annihilator. They are different, but at the same time so good.”
Carvajal also selected another recent Real Madrid legend after being asked to name the club’s greatest player. He overlooked Ronaldo by picking Raul.
“I identify a lot with him, as he is player from the academies and someone who won everything on the basis of his work and effort,” he said.
“I don’t think he was the fastest player, nor the one who controlled the ball best, nor the best at heading, but he did everything right.
“For the goals he has scored for Real Madrid, for me he is the most notable player of the club.”
