USA Beat Thailand 13-0 In Women’s World Cup Match

USA have recorded the biggest win in FIFA Women’s World Cup history after beating Thailand 13-0 (!!).

The holders have kicked off their campaign with an emphatic statement.

Alex Morgan scored FIVE goals with Rose Lavelle (2), Lindsey Horan, Sam Mewis (2), Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd also getting on the score-sheet.

The United States’ previous biggest win in the tournament was a 7-0 victory over Chinese Taipei in 1991.

Jill Ellis’ team have lost just one international game since July 2017 and have won their last seven in a row, scoring 36 goals. They haven’t conceded a goal in any of their past five matches, too.

Speaking after their opening game, Morgan said: “We wanted to showcase ourselves and what we’ve been working on. Every goal matters in this tournament and that’s what we were working on.”

USA coach Ellis admitted that she was in tears on the touchline as her side thrashed Thailand.

“I think the attitude was spot on, the forward produced and we kept a clean sheet. We wanted to come out and attack and we did that.

“You want your forwards hot in a tournament and it is a great start especially for Alex Morgan. Hopefully she carries it on through the tournament.

“It was awesome, I was in tears watching them. It verifies who we picked. It is about building momentum and that is part of the process. You want the players to leave with a good feeling, if they are in a good place mentally that is a big step.”

Meanwhile, USA resume their title defence on Sunday against Chile before facing Sweden.
