Ole Gunnar Solskjær Has Compared Fred With Two Former Manchester United Teammates

Fred might still have a future at Manchester United after Ole Gunnar Solskjær compared him with two of his former teammates.

The 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder was José Mourinho’s marquee signing last summer, splashing out a reported £47m to bring him to Old Trafford from Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, Fred failed to secure a regular starting position under the Special One and his situation hasn’t improved under Solskjær.

The United caretaker manager used him as a late substitute against Cardiff City in December, as well as starting him against Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.

While he has only featured once in 2019 during United’s win over Reading in the FA Cup, the 45-year-old Norwegian has likened the former Shakhtar ace’s struggles to those of Diego Forlán and Juan Sebastián Verón.

“We know there’s a very, very good player there with Fred, so hopefully he’ll adjust to the English game because there’s no doubt there’s talent, absolutely no doubt,” Solskjær said (via the Manchester Evening News).

“I didn’t do Andreas [Pereira] or Scott [McTominay] or Fred any favours when I put them in against Reading when we’ve had nine changes.

“Next time they come in there might be one or two changes, and it’s easier, and then we’ll see what they’re capable of.

“There’s loads of players that have come in and found the first few months difficult.

“One of the best players I’ve played with that struggled the most was Diego Forlán. Verón [is another] you know, those two fantastic players and it took a bit of time. But when they settled they performed.

“So I don’t think he needs to worry too much. He’ll get chances.”

The Red Devils will host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Solskjær’s men riding the momentum train after their impressive display against Chelsea in the FA Cup on Monday.

SPORTbible readers on Wednesday voted United-Liverpool as the biggest rivalry in British football.
