Matthijs De Ligt’s Move To Juventus Makes Him 3rd Most Expensive Teenager Ever

Matthijs de Ligt’s €75 million move from Ajax to Juventus makes him the third most expensive teenager ever, and he’s not even the most expensive teenager to move this summer.

Juventus signing of Matthijs de Ligt on Thursday was a brilliant piece of business for the Old Lady. Signing the player who knocked you out of the Champions League and securing a centre back of world class quality for the next 10 years, and all at a reasonable price.

Sure once upon-a-time €75 million would have felt like you’d spent all the money every club had put together for transfers, but these days it doesn’t necessarily get you that much.

Despite it being a decent price, when compared to other transfer prices, De Ligt has still become the third most expensive teenager, although not even the most expensive this summer.

2. João Félix – Benfica to Atlético Madrid – $141 million

3. Matthijs de Ligt – Ajax to Juventus – $84 million

4. Anthony Martial – Monaco to Manchester United – $67 million

5. Rodrygo Goes – Santos to Real Madrid – $50.5 million

6. Vinícius Júnior – Flamengo to Real Madrid – $50.5 million

7. Lucas Moura – São Paulo to Paris Saint-Germain – $45 million

8. Luke Shaw – Southampton to Manchester United – $42 million

9. Wayne Rooney – Everton to Manchester United – $41.5 million

10. Javier Saviola – River Plate to Barcelona – $40.2 million

It’s not surprise to see that the top six places are all occupied by players who have made their moves in the last two years, since Neymar’s move to PSG blew transfer prices out of the water.

That same season Kylian Mbappe moved to Paris but for the first year his move was a loan, moving permanently a year after to avoid FFP issues for the Ligue 1 side.

Joao Felix is this summer’s most expensive teenager with his huge move to Atletico Madrid but he’s not the only other one on the list with Rodrygo Goes move to Real Madrid fifth on the list.

Manchester United appear on the list three times, for Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and Wayne Rooney, but it might have been four had Sir Alex Ferguson not baulked at the price for Lucas Moura.

It’s too early to tell whether De Ligt will turn out to be a successful move but so far everything we’ve seen from him expect it to be a good deal, and expect him to move for a lot more if he leaves Juventus.
