‘GGG’ Storms Out Of The Ring After Controversial ‘Canelo’ Defeat

After the farce of KSI vs Logan Paul, what the world of professional boxing needed was a good shot in the arm to remind everyone that it’s not just a sport that any old internet imbecile can turn their hand to and make millions.

With that in mind, the boxing gods had just the tonic in store – Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin, meeting for the second time with the WBA and WBC middleweight belts on the line.

Two boxers at the top of their game knocking seven shades out of each other in a high-quality match-up, and this time it’s personal.

Canelo was returning from a drugs ban for taking the banned steroid clenbuterol. GGG had said that he was – understandably – put out about this and had lost all respect for him.

After all the bad blood and shouting stopped, the fight didn’t disappoint.

Canelo took it by a whisker. He won on the scorecards with two judges favouring him, and the other scoring a draw.

Whilst it’s more important that everyone got to see a great fight, with two champions giving everything they had, it’s not been without controversy.

No sooner was the result announced, GGG was off. Obviously outraged and clearly in the belief that he won the fight, he stormed from the ring and refused to even give himself up for a post-fight interview.

OK, so the idea of going through a gruelling months-long training regime, putting your body on the line for 12 rounds, losing, and then being forced to dissect that loss immediately after is perhaps one of the cruellest tasks in the game, but still.

Luckily, we have access to a picture of one of the scorecards from the fight. Journalist Jon Castagnino managed to bag a snapshot of the judges reasoning. It clearly shows their working and proves that two of them did indeed believe that the Mexican fighter won the bout fair and square.

Obviously, a lot of people don’t agree.

That brings further good news for fans of the sweetest science. This means that we will probably see the two boys go at it again. When he did actually speak after the bout, Golovkin said: “I’m not going to say who won tonight, because the victory belongs to Canelo according to the judges.

“I thought I fought better than he did. We would like to have a third fight, we will negotiate that, that’s what we want.”

He also seemed to address the scorecard controversy, adding: “I’m just a fighter. I’m doing my job. How to judge my performance, my work, is not my job. As a fighter, I’m just doing my job inside the ring.”

“As far as I’m concerned, he was not running from me. He wasn’t running at all in this fight. But that doesn’t mean that he won this fight.”

“I don’t think he really demonstrated some super, great Mexican boxing style. Yes, he was not running around this time, but it doesn’t mean that he won this fight. He didn’t do anything special.”

For his part, it seems as if Alvarez is game to have another crack too. He said: “If the people want another fight then we’ll do it again,

“We’ll do it, no doubt.”

Bring it on.
