Does Gareth Bale deserve more credit for what he’s achieved at Real Madrid?
Yes, the expectation was massive considering Los Blancos paid a then world-record fee to sign him from Tottenham in 2013 but the Welshman has delivered big-time.
Bale scored a record 100th goal for Real in the Madrid derby away at Atletico at the weekend and his numbers are actually very impressive when you compare them to Real legends Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo Nazario.
With a century of goals and 64 assists in a Real shirt so far, only R9 has more goals than him (just the four) and only Figo managed more assists but there’s a chance Bale eclipses his tally.
Persistent injuries for the Welshman mean the quartet have played a similar amount of games, but it makes for even better reading as far as Bale is concerned.
He’s won 14 trophies during is five-and-a-half seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu and showed he’s a big game player by scoring or assisting in nine of the finals he’s played in – most recently his brace off the bench in last year’s Champions League final.
All of this in an injury-plagued spell in the Spanish capital. In January, Bale suffered a 22nd separate injury in his time as a Real Madrid player and led to Spanish outlet AS referring to him as ‘Mr Glass‘ on their front page.
His injury record is largely made up of muscular based injuries to the calf, hamstring and adductors and it’s caused him to miss a total of missed 84 games.
Does Bale deserve more respect?
